Using Psychotherapy to Control Teen Weight Gain

If the last two blogs on cognitive behavioral therapy resonated with you, you may be interested to know that teenagers at risk for uncontrolled weight gain have also found success with a treatment called Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).

IPT is especially effective with teens because it targets challenging peer difficulties that can lead to unhealthy habits, like binge eating and comfort eating. As patients work through social problems, they learn to improve social functioning, enhance interpersonal relationships and alter damaging thoughts about food and self-image. According to Dr. Marian Tanofsky-Kraff, a pilot study conducted on IPT found it to be “both feasible and acceptable to adolescent girls at risk of adult obesity, and suggests that it may prevent excess weight gain.”

If you or someone you know is a teenager struggling with obesity, weight gain or weight-related health problems, call Barker Bariatric for a no-obligation consultation. Dr. Barker works with patients of all ages, helping them achieve health and happiness through safe, healthy weight-loss procedures.
